Why Tier Based Architectures Don't Scale

Nati Shalom from GigaSpaces wrote an interesting piece on his blog about why tier based architecture's don't scale. Think "weakest link" and your half way there.

Read it here.

While it sounds like he has a good point, some real world examples would have been nice.

We have many real world examples with customers such as Lehman Brothers, NYSE, Virgin Mobile, Big Fish Games and many others.

A few places to look include:
-- Julian Browne, former head of architecture, on how they scaled at Virgin Mobile
-- Various GigaSpaces customer testimonials
-- Bec Wilson on Sempra Energy Trading
-- TuneWiki story for a good Web 2.0 example
